Baby Don't Be Bald: Does it really work? What's in it? Is it safe?
This product was recommended to me by several different people to treat my 4-year-old's slow growing hair. Honestly, my daughter has a beautiful head of healthy hair and I'm okay with it being short. But for whatever reason, other's around me had concerns which made me feel a little insecure about the length of her hair compared to other children her age. So, what's the skinny on this oddly named product?
What's In It?
“It contains no harmful chemicals and contains all natural ingredients.”
As stated on the back of the jar, this product is designed for ages 2 to 100 years old to nourish the scalp and stimulate healthy hair growth. It contains no harmful chemicals and contains all natural ingredients. The active ingredients are Vitamin E, lanolin, aloe, vegetable oil, mineral oil, and other essential ingredients enriched with Formula 291B.
Let's Talk About These Ingredients
The first ingredient listed is Vitamin E. Vitamin E is an antioxidant the helps repair damage to hair follicles which promotes hair growth. It also reduces inflammation and builds tissue. The second ingredient is lanolin, which is basically sheep sebum. It's a waxy substance produced by wool bearing animals. It's used to treat dry hair and skin. It helps trap moisture in without dissolving. The next ingredient is aloe. Aloe vera contains proteolytic enzymes which repairs dead skin cells on the scalp. It's also a natural hair conditioner, leaves the hair soft and shiny, promotes hair growth, and reduces dandruff. Next ingredient listed is vegetable oil. Vegetable oil (such as coconut oil or sunflower oil) is a natural conditioner and can treat dandruff, scalp irritation, and hair loss. So far, so good!
The next two ingredients concern me. First, mineral oil. I've always been advised to steer clear from any hair products that contain mineral oil. I've heard it clogs pores and suffocates the scalp preventing healthy hair growth. But after doing a little research, I find that that's actually not true. Mineral oil is made from liquid petroleum and is included in many hair and beauty products. The purpose of this oil is to maintain moisture, prevent frizz, and add shine. The last ingredient listed is essential ingredients enriched with Formula 291B. I have no idea what Formula 291B is. I looked all over the internet for days, and came up with nothing. This is concerning to me because I like to know what I'm putting on my child's scalp.
Does it Work?
“I'm happy to report that THE PRODUCT WORKED!”
Though I was concerned about the mystery ingredient listed, I went ahead and gave the product a try (since it said there were no harmful chemicals). I purchased the product from my local beauty supply store for about six bucks. The product itself is light blue and non-greasy. It smelled like typical hair grease. I sectioned my daughter's hair and rubbed a generous amount directly on her scalp then massaged her scalp for a couple of minutes. I did this three times a week for about three months. I'm happy to report that THE PRODUCT WORKED! See before and after picture...
Do I Recommend This Product?
So, is it magic? Honestly, no. I believe you can get results by simply applying a natural oil to your scalp and regularly doing a gentle scalp massage. But does the product work? Absolutely! Do I recommend it? Kind of. I recommend trying some organic ways to stimulate hair growth and regular maintenance for healthy hair. If you are a person that doesn't care that much about what's in your products as long as it works, than I definitely recommend this product!
