It's Period Day!

How do you celebrate your tween's first period? I have a few things in mind for my girls when that special day comes!

First on my list is creating a thoughtful period kit to give to my daughters on that special day. I really wanted to help take some of the guesswork out what products to buy and also make it fun to alleviate any awkwardness. I want them to be very comfortable with coming to me with any questions or feelings they may be having.

"I really wanted to help take the guesswork out...and alleviate any awkwardness."

So, what is a period kit? It's a tool kit with all the necessary things needed to make this, often confusing, natural part of growing up easier; making your tween feel more empowered rather than embarrassed or awkward. (Use mine as a guide)

What's in it?

  1. Menstrual products - This can include panty liners, pads (in multiple sizes depending on flow), period panties, and tampons. I personally decided to wait until my daughters are at least 13 years old before we start talking about tampons. That's just me. You have to decide what's right for your child and what they're comfortable with. Tampons are definitely more convenient for certain activities such as gymnastics or swimming.

  2. Comfort Items - Heating pad for soothing cramps (you can also use a water bottle filled with warm water for this), favorite candy or treat, and even herbal teas that help alleviate stress and bloating like chamomile or ginger teas. (Here's a link for the cutest microwavable heating pad ever!)

  3. Hygiene Items - At this point, the girls are growing up so, this may be the time to opt for a more grown up deodorant. Also, feminine wipes or sprays. I also added, a gentle facial cleanser and some facial sheet masks (for those pesky "period" pimples), a sweet smelling lotion (just to make her feel feminine and pretty), and a spa headband.

  4. Organization and Storage - You need a bag or pretty box to store all the goodies in so that it's easily accessible.

  5. Go Bags - This is definitely optional but, I also added a "go" bag to my daughter's kit for when she's on her period on the go or in case she starts her period away from home. It's basically a small version period kit small enough to fit in her purse or small backpack. I included 3-5 pads, a few panty liners, wipes, 2 pairs of period panties, and a zip-lock bag (to store soiled underwear until she gets home).

Personalization

Every girl's experience is unique, so personalize the kit according to her preferences, needs, and comfort levels. You could even add a journal, notepad, or phone app to encourage her to track her period dates to better understand her body's natural cycles.

"Every girl's experience is unique..."

Remember, this first period kit is not only practical but also a thoughtful gesture of love and support during this important milestone. Openly discuss menstruation with your daughter, and empower her to embrace this natural process with confidence!
