Most curly girls know that oil goes with natural hair like sugar on rice. Am I the only one that likes sugar on rice? LOL! Anyway, I think you know what I mean. Oil (when used with a moisturizer) is a proven solution for chronic dry hair and scalp. Oils can provide nourishment to the hair and scalp and is most often used as a sealant to trap in moisture, therefore, preventing dry hair.

Here's a list of my top 6 favorite oils to combat dry hair.

1. Avocado Oil

This superfood is rich in monounsaturated fats, proteins, vitamins, potassium, and other minerals. Avocado oil can be used to help moisturize, repair, and strengthen your hair. Minerals found in this oil can help seal cuticles which prevents breakage.

Avocado oil is definitely a "go-to" when my hair is thirsty. I apply this oil to my hair on top of my moisturizer for nourishment and shine. It's a light weight oil safe for daily use on the hair and scalp.

* You can add avocado oil to your shampoo to fight against dry itchy scalp or add it to your conditioner for added moisture and slip.

2. Jamaican Black Castor Oil

Castor oil has natural anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal properties which makes it great for treating dry, itchy scalp and scalp infections. It's also used to treat hair loss, promote hair growth, and a natural conditioner leaving hair soft and shiny.

This oil is very thick and has a peculiar smell but it works! You can mix this oil with a carrier oil such as coconut or argon oil or use it alone.

3. Rosehip Oil

Rosehip oil is full of essential fatty acids that helps repair and renew damaged hair follicles and tissue which results in healthy hair growth. It's non-greasy and well absorbed by the scalp leaving it soft and moisturized.

This oil can be applied directly to the hair and scalp along with a moisturizer. It can also be used as a hot oil treatment for deep conditioning.

4. Olive Oil

Olive oil is an essential oil great for sealing in moisture, shine, strength, and treats dandruff. (It also does wonders for cradle cap!) It's rich in vitamins A, E, and antioxidants. Olive oil penetrates the hair shaft and retains moisture. It's also great for softening the hair. Olive oil contains emollients which gives it softening properties.

*You can apply on top of your usual moisturizers as a sealant or as a pre-poo before shampooing (or co-washing).

5. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is made up of a mixture of saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fats. It's used to combat hair loss, dry hair, and dry scalp and even known to treat stretch marks. You can use coconut oil as a pre-poo, a hot oil treatment, add it to your conditioner for extra shine and slip, a moisturizer and a sealant. (This oil is amazing!!!)

6. Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil is extracted from the seeds of jojoba trees. It contains vitamins E and B, important minerals like zinc, silicon, and copper. Jojoba oil can effectively hydrate your hair and scalp, promote healthy hair growth, and act as a sebum therefore improving the health and shine of your hair.

*I like to use this oil on top of my usual (cream based) moisturizers. You can also add a few drops to your favorite shampoo and conditioner which can help remove buildup from the scalp and add shine.
