Kids hair care doesn't have to be hard or elaborate. In this article, I'm going to share my very simple and effective kids hair care routine!
Taking care of kids’ natural hair is essential to maintain its health, strength, manageability and promote hair growth. Here is my simple hair routine and product recommendations that I've used for years:
Gentle Cleansing:
Use a mild, sulfate-free shampoo specifically designed for natural hair.
My recommendations: Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Shine Shampoo, Camille Rose Clean Rinse, or Shea Moisture Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Shampoo
2. Moisturize and Condition:
Regularly moisturize your child’s hair using water-based products.
You can add a few drops of castor, olive, or jojoba oil to your moisturizers or conditioners for extra shine and nourishment!
My recommendations: Camille Rose Curl Love Moisture Milk (I often use this with the Camille Rose Cocoa Nibs & Honey Ultimate Strength Serum also) or Shea Moisture Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Leave-in Conditioner.
3. Detangling:
Invest in a good detangler to make combing through coils and curls pain-free.
The Kinky Curly Knot Today Detangler is highly recommended for its creamy texture and detangling abilities. I frequently use the Aunt Jackie's Knot Havin' It! also for my daughter with thick coils and curls. For fine hair textures, I recommend Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Extra Moisturizing Detangler Spray.
4. Styling Tools:
I always use a wide tooth comb along with the detangler. If the hair is extremely matted, I'll use a detangling brush to alleviate any discomfort, such as the Unbrush or Curl Keeper brush to gently comb through thick curls and coils.
5. Curl Definition:
Enhance your child’s natural curls with a good curl definer.
Consider the Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie if you want a cream styler or Camille Rose Curl Maker or Kinky Curly Curling Custard if you prefer more of a jelly consistency.
6. Edge Control:
Keep edges neat and tamed with an edge control, if you prefer. I personally don't use edge controls on my daughters because I worry about build-up. Plus, I'm good with how their natural edges look without heavy edge products.
Try the Carol's Daughter Edge Control Smoother or Taliah Waajid Style & Shine
7. Protective Styles:
Opt for protective styles that minimize manipulation and promote hair health and growth.
The Just For Me Curl Peace Braiding & Twisting Grip Glaze is great for braids and twists. I also often use Shine 'n Jam Magic Fingers. Click here to learn more about protective styling!
Remember to choose products that are free of parabens and sulfates, as these can be drying for natural hair. Prioritize ingredients that provide moisture, detangling, and a healthy sheen. Happy natural hair care journey for your little one!
